2. Texture
The texture of watercolor paper refers to its surface grain, which affects brushstrokes and the overall look of your painting. It comes in three main types: rough, cold-pressed (medium grain), and hot-pressed (smooth).
Rough
Has a pronounced grain that gives a rich texture, ideal for painting rocks, walls, and other surfaces where you want a tactile, natural effect. However, it’s not suitable for detailed work.Cold-Pressed / Medium Grain
The most versatile and popular choice — a safe option when you’re unsure what to choose. It offers a good balance between texture and detail, suitable for landscapes, portraits, flowers, and most subjects.Hot-Pressed / Smooth
Very smooth surface with fast color flow, perfect for detailed work like illustration, portraits, and architectural sketches.
Disadvantages: Dries quickly, making it harder to achieve soft washes; pigment tends to gather along brush edges.
3. Weight
Paper weight, measured in grams per square meter (g/m²), reflects its thickness. Thickness affects water absorption and whether stretching (mounting) is needed.
190g/m² (90lb) and below:
Thin paper that wrinkles easily when wet — must be stretched before painting. Best for small practice works.300g/m² (140lb):
The most common standard weight. It may warp slightly when wet but remains stable for most techniques. Small paintings usually don’t need stretching, though large or very wet works should be stretched.
Recommended starting point for beginners.600g/m² (300lb) and above:
Very thick, like cardboard — doesn’t buckle even when soaked. No stretching required, but expensive.
